Voting in the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and Hall Students’ Union elections begins.
Voting in the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and Hall Students’ Union elections began on Tuesday (6 January 2026) in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, marking a historic moment in campus politics.
Polling started at around 9:00am and is scheduled to continue uninterrupted until 3:30pm. From early morning, students lined up at polling centres to cast their votes, with long queues reflecting strong participation and enthusiasm.
This is the first time students’ union elections are being held since Jagannath University gained full university status, making the day particularly significant for the institution.
According to the Election Commission, around 16,500 students are expected to vote at 178 booths set up across 39 polling centres. Of these, 38 centres are designated for the central students’ union, while one separate centre has been allocated for the hall students’ union. In addition, 1,242 students are registered to vote in the hall union election.
To ensure a smooth voting process, law enforcement personnel and volunteer teams have been deployed alongside the university administration to maintain security and order on campus.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim said the administration had taken all necessary steps to conduct the long-awaited election in a free, fair and impartial manner. “This election is crucial for nurturing democratic practice and developing future leadership at the university. I hope students will exercise their voting rights with discipline in a celebratory environment,” he said.
University Proctor Prof Dr Muhammad Tazammul Haque said adequate security arrangements were in place and would remain effective until polling concluded.
According to the candidate list, four candidates are contesting the Liberation War and Democracy post, nine for Education and Research, five for Science and Technology, five for Health and Environment, four for Law and Human Rights, eight for International Affairs, seven for Literature and Culture, seven for Sports, four for Transport, ten for Social Service and Student Welfare, seven for Library and Seminar, and 57 candidates are competing for seven member posts.
In the women’s hall election, a preliminary list has been published for 13 posts, including vice-president, general secretary, assistant general secretary and several other portfolio positions, along with eight candidates vying for four member posts.
The JnUCSU election was originally scheduled for 30 December but was postponed following the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
