Hasnat Calls for 14-Point Reform, Including Ban on Student Politics at DU

Hasnat Abdullah, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has put forward a comprehensive 14-point proposal addressing various issues at Dhaka University (DU). Among his key demands are the banning of student politics on campus and the strengthening of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu).

On Monday evening, Abdullah detailed his demands on his verified Facebook page and invited feedback and support from the public.

His proposals include urging the DU administration to identify and take legal action against Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members implicated in the July Revolution attacks on students. He also called for the retraction of false cases filed by BCL members against students over the past 15 years and for compensation for those who have suffered from wrongful accusations.

Abdullah emphasized the need for a detailed plan to transform the university into a fully residential institution. Until this plan is published and implemented, he proposed that student accommodation be allocated based on merit. He also stressed the necessity of building more residence halls to address current shortages and expanding common room facilities for female students.

In addition, he recommended renovating Salimullah Muslim Hall and redistributing its seats, abolishing guest and common room privileges in the halls through legislation, and introducing need-based scholarships for first-year students.

Abdullah also advocated for the modernization and expansion of the central library and hall reading rooms, improving food quality in DU halls and canteens, and potentially increasing subsidies to enhance standards.

To bolster campus safety, he suggested prohibiting public transport on university grounds. He also proposed upgrading the university’s medical center and establishing drug stores in all residential halls. Lastly, he called for modernizing the registrar building’s service quality and rebuilding the university’s central mosque with contemporary architecture.
