Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today seized 32 gold bars weighing around 3.941 kilograms, valued at Tk 7.35 crore and arrested two alleged smugglers in Meherpur while they were attempting to smuggle the gold into India through the Nazirakona border.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Chuadanga Battalion (BGB-6) conducted a drive in the Nagarbil area, around 700 yards inside Bangladesh from border pillar No. 110 under Nazirakona Border Outpost (BOP) in Mujibnagar upazila, said a BGB press release.

At around 12:40 pm, BGB personnel spotted two men carrying a bag towards the border. Sensing the presence of the force, the men attempted to flee, leaving the bag behind. However, the BGB personnel chased and arrested them.

The detainees were identified as Md Asadul, 50, son of late Abu Bakkar, and Md Juel Hossain, 30, son of Madar. Both hail from Sonapur Notun Para village in Mujibnagar upazila.

Later, in the presence of local residents, BGB personnel recovered 32 gold bars from the abandoned bag. The seized gold was valued at Tk 7,35,19,355, reports BSS.

The process of handing over the detainees to Mujibnagar Police Station and depositing the seized gold with the Meherpur Treasury Office is underway, the release added.
