The government is moving ahead with plans to acquire 14 Boeing aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines while also considering short-term Airbus leasing to address immediate fleet shortages and support the national carrier’s expansion.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said the proposed Boeing purchase has received in-principle approval, with only the formal signing of the agreement remaining.

He said the aircraft acquisition is part of a broader effort to modernise Biman’s fleet and expand its capacity in response to rising passenger demand and future route plans.

Officials said the proposed order is expected to include a mix of Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-haul services and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for regional and medium-haul operations. The deal is estimated to be worth around $3.7 billion at list prices.

However, since delivery of the new aircraft could take up to five years, the government is also working on interim measures to maintain operations and avoid capacity constraints.

Millat said Biman is planning to lease aircraft for the next five years, with dry leasing being the preferred option. Leasing discussions are being explored mainly with Airbus, which could also help diversify the airline’s fleet.

He noted that Biman currently operates international services with around 14 aircraft, which is far below the estimated requirement of 30 to 35 aircraft needed to support growing demand and planned route expansion.

According to the minister, the government’s dual-track strategy, long-term aircraft purchase and short-term leasing, is intended to ensure operational stability while laying the groundwork for sustainable growth.

He also said the aviation sector is undergoing broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening management and enhancing passenger services at Biman.

As part of that effort, steps have already been taken to fill key manpower shortages and build a more effective organisational structure within the airline.

On Hajj operations, Millat said all necessary preparations have been completed and required personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth and uninterrupted flights for pilgrims.

The government aims to transform Biman into an international-standard airline through fleet expansion, structural reforms and improved service quality.
