Ten people were killed, including one of the attackers, and at least 12 others were injured in a shooting near a Jewish gathering at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, Australian authorities said.
Police shot dead one gunman at the scene and arrested a second suspect, who remains in critical condition. Two police officers were also injured during the operation.
Authorities said there is no longer an active threat, though residents were advised to avoid the area as emergency and forensic operations continue.
Witnesses reported sudden gunfire near crowded beach areas, prompting panic as families, including women and children, fled or took shelter in nearby homes.
Investigators are examining the background and possible motives behind the attack, which occurred on the first night of Chanukah. A Jewish federal lawmaker described the incident as a “terror attack” and a “horrifying tragedy.”
Hospitals across Sydney treated a surge of casualties as police continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
