At least six people lost their lives and several others were injured in a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, India, on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred on the stairway leading to the temple amid a heavy rush of devotees offering prayers during the Hindu holy month of Sawan.

Authorities confirmed that the temple was overcrowded at the time. Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said he was heading to the site to assess the situation directly.

Mansa Devi is among the most frequented temples in Haridwar and draws thousands of pilgrims during this time of year.

Visuals from the scene showed injured individuals being taken to hospitals by ambulance, with some receiving immediate treatment on-site.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident and stated that rescue operations are underway.
