Strong floodwaters swept cars away in Gapyeong province
At least 14 people have died and 12 remain missing after days of torrential rain triggered floods and landslides across South Korea, according to the national disaster agency.
In Gapyeong, northeast of Seoul, a landslide damaged a bridge and forced evacuations, with residents seen wading through thick mud to reach shelters. Two people died and four went missing in the area on Sunday.
Further south, a village in the Chungcheon region was buried under earth and debris. Sancheong county has reported six deaths and seven people missing.
Nearly 10,000 residents have evacuated, and over 41,000 households temporarily lost power since the heavy rains began on Wednesday.
Floodwaters have submerged roads, damaged buildings, and destroyed farmland and livestock. Casualties and damage have been reported in central, southern, northern, and western parts of the country.
The worst of the rain has eased in some areas, but more downpours are forecast for Seoul and northern regions. Serious landslide alerts remain in effect nationwide.
Authorities have launched a multi-agency recovery and relief operation as the search for the missing continues.
