Newsom to Sue Trump Over LA National Guard Deployment

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced his plan to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, calling the action “illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional.”

The Democratic governor said the lawsuit would be filed Monday, challenging the federal decision and aiming to reverse the deployment order.

President Donald Trump authorized the troop deployment under a federal law that allows intervention during rebellions or threats to federal authority. Newsom argues, however, that such federal action requires coordination with the state governor—an issue he intends to test in court.

“We’re going to put that legal theory to the test with our lawsuit tomorrow,” Newsom said on Sunday.

The National Guard was sent in response to growing protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles and spread to nearby cities such as Paramount and Compton. By Sunday, tensions escalated, with demonstrators clashing with Guard members, blocking a major freeway, and setting autonomous vehicles on fire.

Newsom emphasized the importance of upholding state rights and constitutional boundaries, even amid civil unrest.
