Tanzania's Devastating Crash Kills at Least 28
At least 28 people were killed in a devastating road accident in southwestern Tanzania after a lorry lost control and plowed into two other vehicles, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The collision occurred late Saturday near the Iwambi hill, close to the border with Zambia. According to local police chief Benjamin Kuzaga, the lorry’s brakes failed, causing it to veer into a minibus and another vehicle. The impact sent the minibus hurtling into a nearby river.
Among the dead were 10 women and four children. Police have attributed the crash to the lorry driver’s negligence.
“The cause of the accident has been attributed to the negligence of the lorry driver, who failed to control the vehicle on the steep Iwambi hill,” Kuzaga said in a statement.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her condolences in a message posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying she received news of the accident “with deep sorrow.”
Road accidents are tragically frequent in Tanzania. A 2018 report by the World Health Organization cited 3,256 official road deaths in 2016, though it estimated the actual toll could be between 13,000 and 19,000 due to underreporting.
This latest tragedy follows another major accident in 2024, when a truck crashed into three vehicles in northern Tanzania, killing at least 25 people — including nationals from the United States, South Africa, and Kenya.
