At least 13 people were killed and one injured after a passenger vehicle was crushed by a landslide in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Friday, authorities said.

According to Indian broadcaster NDTV, the accident occurred in the Kahu-Du Nala area on the Udaipur-Killar road in Lahaul and Spiti district.

The Tata Sumo was travelling from Kullu to Pangi when a large section of the hillside collapsed, sending massive rocks and debris crashing onto the vehicle and burying it under rubble.

Local authorities said the victims included the driver, identified as Bir Singh.

Police from Tindi Police Station, local administration officials and rescue teams rushed to the scene and launched an emergency operation.

One passenger was rescued alive from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital, where the injured person is undergoing treatment.

Officials said the Udaipur-Killar road had been closed on Thursday following an earlier landslide, forcing the passengers to spend the night in Tindi. After the road was reopened on Friday, they resumed their journey before the fatal landslide struck.

Rescue operations were continuing at the site as authorities assessed the damage and searched the debris.
