US President Donald Trump has said Iran has agreed not to develop a nuclear weapon, expressing optimism about ongoing negotiations and suggesting a possible future meeting with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Speaking in an interview broadcast on Wednesday, Trump said Iran had already committed to avoiding nuclear arms as talks continue over ending hostilities and reaching a broader agreement.
“They’ve already agreed they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, adding that Iran’s top leadership remains actively involved in the negotiations.
Trump described Khamenei as influential in the process and indicated that a meeting could take place in the future if discussions progress positively.
“I’d like to meet him. We probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” he said.
The US president also described the recent conflict involving Iran as a success from Washington’s perspective, saying efforts are ongoing to secure a diplomatic agreement.
“We’re working on a deal, and that happens fine. If it doesn’t happen, that’s OK too,” Trump said, while reiterating that alternative options remain under consideration if diplomacy fails.
The remarks come amid continued diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and addressing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
