A Dhaka tribunal Monday issued an arrest warrant against an additional deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of police in a case filed in November last year over torturing his wife and demanding dowry of Tk 1 crore.

Judge Begum Mafroza Parvin of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 of Dhaka passed the order accepting charges brought against Md Shahadat Hossain Suma, now posted at Tejgaon Division, in the case.

The court directed the officer-in-charge of Paltan Model Police Station to submit by January 16 the progress report on implementation of arrest warrant issued against Suma.

On November 22 last year, Suma's wife Sheikh Mrinmoyee Hossain filed a case against the police official for torturing her and demanding dowry from her.

Following the case, the tribunal directed Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate to submit a report after conducting a judicial inquiry into the matter. After receipt of the court order, Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Ashrafuzzaman conducted a judicial inquiry and said the charges of torturing his

wife brought against the police official was found to be true and the charges for demanding dowry were not proven.

But the victim filed a no-confidence petition against the judicial inquiry and the tribunal accepted it and issued arrest warrant against the accused. - Special Correspondent
