Dhaka, Oct 8 - Authorities have recently evicted the IG Gate Colony slum in the capital’s Shyampur area, long known as a notorious hub for illegal drug trading, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Cell said on Thursday.

The special eviction drive was conducted jointly by the relevant authorities of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) with assistance from Shyampur Model Thana Police between September 26 and September 28, 2026.

According to Shyampur police sources, an organized syndicate had been running both open and covert drug operations in the IG Gate area for a long time. The frequent gathering of drug peddlers and addicts disrupted normal life for local residents and raised serious safety concerns, particularly due to the presence of several educational institutions nearby, which put students and youths at high risk of drug exposure.

To protect students, ensure a safe environment around educational institutions, and maintain law and order, police had been conducting anti-drug drives and intelligence surveillance in the area. Based on specific intelligence, police identified drug hotspots, ensured necessary security measures, and initiated the drive to dismantle the illegal trade hub.

DMP figures show that between 2025 and September 2026, a total of 29 drug-related cases and two more over attacks on police officers were filed in the IG Gate area. Additionally, 251 mobile court drives were conducted, resulting in various prison sentences for 389 accused individuals.

Akhtar Hossain, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations), said local residents, teachers, and parents expressed deep relief and welcomed the police initiative. - UNB
