Ferry movement on the Paturia-Daulatdia route was halted at 7:15 pm as thick fog blanketed the Padma River. BIWTC Paturia Ghat Deputy General Manager Abdus Salam said the suspension was ordered after ferry crews reported that poor visibility made navigation unsafe.
To prevent any untoward incidents, authorities decided to stop operations temporarily, he added.
As a result, six ferries remained docked at Paturia Ghat without loading vehicles, while three ferries were stranded mid-river. No ferries were operating from the Daulatdia terminal at the time.
Meanwhile, ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat route were suspended at 8:20 pm due to similar weather conditions on the Jamuna River.
BIWTC Aricha Ghat Manager Md Abdullah said two ferries -- Shah Ali and Chitra -- were stationed at Kazirhat, while two others -- Bir Shreshtha Hamidur Rahman and Dhan Siri -- were stuck in the middle of the river carrying vehicles and passengers, reports BSS.
Authorities said ferry operations would resume once visibility improves and navigation becomes safe.
