World Teachers’ Day is being observed today (October 5) in Bangladesh and across the world to recognise the contributions of teachers and promote their rights, dignity and professional status.

UNESCO has observed the day annually since 1994. This year’s theme is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” marking the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO-UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

In Bangladesh, the day will be marked with various programmes at the national, district and upazila levels.

The government is also honouring 101 distinguished teachers from primary to university level this year. Each recipient will receive Tk 200,000, a crest and a certificate.

Bangladesh formally began observing World Teachers’ Day nationally in 2023 after the Cabinet decided in September that year to include October 5 in the annual calendar.
