Sechasebok Dal convener, two associates held on extortion charge in Kalapara

Swechchasebak Dal convener, two associates arrested in Kalapara on Sunday.

Patuakhali: The police have arrested Sumon Fakir, the convener of the Union Sechasebok Dal along with two associates, on charges of creating a mob and extortion in Kalapara, Patuakhali. On Sunday, the Kalapara police station arrested him from the Ukil Patti area of the municipal town.

The arrested Md. Sumon (37) is the convener of the Nilganj Union Sechasebok Dal of the upazila and the son of Haji Ibrahim Fakir of Ghuta Bacha village of the same union. The other two arrested associates are Sajib (32) and Emon (30).

According to the police, the arrested Sumon Fakir, along with his associates, had created a mob in Nilganj Union and had been taking hostages and extorting money and harassing ordinary people. Fishing equipment worth 2.5 lakh taka was forcibly taken from Chan Mia's fish enclosure in Majidpur village of the union, demanding extortion. When they protested, they were beaten and the women were molested. Chan Mia filed a complaint with Kalapara police station in this incident, naming Sumon as the main accused and seven others.

Investigation officer of the case, Kalapara police station Sub-Inspector Md. Forkan Mia, said that the arrested accused Sumon and his two associates were handed over to the court on Sunday afternoon. In the interest of a fair investigation of the case, a remand application will be filed in the court for their interrogation.

Upazila BNP Secretary Advocate Md. Hafizur Rahman Chunnu said that there are many allegations of extortion by creating a mob against Sumon, the convener of the union Sechasebok  Dal. The leaders of the upazila committee of the Sechasebok Dal have been instructed to take organizational action against him.

Upazila Sechasebok Dal Convener Md. Zakir Hossain Badal Mridha said that it has been decided to expel Nilganj Union Sechasebok Dal Convener Sumon from the party on charges of violating party discipline. A press note in this regard will be delivered to the press club.

Incidentally, earlier, a leader of Mithaganj Union Krishak Dal was expelled from the party on charges of stealing, slaughtering and dividing cows and a leader of Mahipur Union Chhatra Dal was expelled from the party on charges of attacking and vandalizing a private hospital in Mahipur. - Gofran Palash
