The Bangladesh chapter of the SAARC Journalist Forum (SJF) has congratulated Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on the party’s sweeping victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary election held on Thursday.
In a joint statement, SJF Bangladesh Chapter President Nasir Al Mamoon and General Secretary Shiabur Rahman (Shihab) extended congratulations to BNP leaders, activists and supporters for securing what they described as a decisive public mandate.
They said the victory reflected Tarique Rahman’s steadfast leadership in the struggle to restore voting rights and democratic governance, adding that the electorate had expressed clear confidence in his leadership through the ballot.
The SJF leaders voiced hope that the new administration would strengthen democratic institutions, safeguard freedom of expression, enhance media independence and pursue inclusive national development.
They also expressed expectations that the incoming leadership would uphold Bangladesh’s commitments to regional cooperation within the framework of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), while fostering constructive engagement with neighbouring countries to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity across South Asia.
Wishing the new government success, the forum leaders also prayed for Tarique Rahman’s good health and long life.
The SJF Bangladesh chapter reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism, regional collaboration and constructive dialogue in support of democratic values and sustainable development.
