National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, issued a stark warning on Tuesday to political advisers who approach their duties half-heartedly. Speaking after the NCP’s district and upazila coordination meeting at Naogaon Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium, he said there is no safe exit for such individuals except death.

“No matter where they go in the world, the people of Bangladesh will find them,” Sarjis Alam said, stressing that a government formed after a revolution cannot function effectively if its members exhibit negligence or lack commitment.

The NCP leader also criticised the Election Commission, alleging that it is trying to grant registration to a party called Jatiya League, which he described as “existing only as a tiny room next to a toilet.” Sarjis warned that the people of Bangladesh and the NCP would never accept such registration if it is intended to rehabilitate the Awami League.

“Any party seeking registration must undergo thorough scrutiny, not simply follow outdated standards,” he said. Sarjis Alam clarified that while the NCP welcomes the formation of new political parties by the country’s good citizens, “no version of the Awami League is relevant in post-revolution Bangladesh. We will never accept that.”

Confirming the NCP’s plan for the upcoming national election, Sarjis Alam said the party will contest under the Shapla (water lily) symbol. “There is no legal bar to using the Shapla symbol. Yet, the Election Commission, though a constitutionally independent body, is now behaving arbitrarily or perhaps acting under pressure. This will not be tolerated,” he added.

He urged the Election Commission to maintain public confidence and operate as an independent constitutional institution, warning that any compromise on this would undermine the democratic process.

Referring to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s recent remarks, Sarjis Alam expressed sympathy for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to political conflicts. “We do not want to see such incidents in future Bangladesh. Many BNP leaders and activists have faced similar tragedies, caused by the Awami League. At the local level, collaborators of the Awami League should not be given shelter or protection in exchange for money or benefits,” he said.

The district and upazila coordination meeting was attended by NCP Joint Convener Monira Sharmin, Rajshahi Divisional Organising Secretary Imran Imon, and leaders and activists from various upazilas of Naogaon district. The discussions focused on election preparedness, party coordination, and strengthening the NCP’s presence ahead of the national polls.

Sarjis Alam’s strong statements signal the party’s firm stance on political accountability, electoral transparency, and its determination to maintain the Shapla symbol as a key identity in the forthcoming elections.
