BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaks with journalists after paying respects at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) in Sylhet on 7 July.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday urged party leaders and activists to start preparing for the next national election by earning the people’s trust and refraining from wrongdoing.
“It is your responsibility to prepare for the election without engaging in quarrels or internal disputes,” Fakhrul said at a doa mahfil and discussion event in Sylhet.
He explained that preparation means fostering public confidence and affection for BNP. “We must create a situation where people believe there is no alternative to supporting BNP,” he added.
The event was organised to pray for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and the good health of Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Fakhrul reminded the audience of the sacrifices made by BNP leaders and activists over the last 16 years, saying, “We have endured oppression and hardship, but we still dream of a new Bangladesh—free from injustice and inequality.”
He called on party members to behave responsibly and avoid actions such as land grabbing, extortion, or occupying businesses. “Our actions must reflect our values. No one should have reason to accuse us,” he stressed.
Emphasising party unity, he urged everyone to follow the path shown by party founder Ziaur Rahman and Chairperson Khaleda Zia. “If we stay united, our victory is certain,” he said.
Fakhrul expressed gratitude to Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus for setting a mid-February timeline for the national election, following a meeting with Tarique Rahman in London.
He warned that any delay in holding the election would harm the nation. “It will deter investment, delay job creation for youth, increase insecurity, and weaken the judiciary and law and order,” he cautioned.
Only an elected government with public support can bring lasting peace and stability, he said, reminding the audience that “no government is stronger than one chosen by the people.”
Fakhrul reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to democracy, youth employment, and national development. He highlighted the party’s 31-point outline for state reform, calling it a roadmap to a stronger and more prosperous Bangladesh.
He concluded by calling on the younger generation to take the lead in shaping a better future and urged BNP to guide the country on the path to transformation.
