BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir underscored the urgent need to uphold democratic rights and conduct elections to firmly establish democracy in Bangladesh.
“Democracy alone is not sufficient; understanding its rights and responsibilities is equally important,” he said. “Only by embracing these responsibilities can democracy take a true institutional form.”
Speaking virtually as the chief guest at the golden jubilee celebration of Thakurgaon Riverview High School on Monday, 9 June, Mirza Fakhrul expressed concern over the declining quality of education in the country.
“Despite numerous movements, revolutions, and mass uprisings, the standard of education has significantly worsened,” he remarked.
Emphasizing the broader scope of democracy, he added, “We want democratic rights, free elections, and civil liberties, including the rights of students. Democracy is more than just a political system—it requires people to understand both their rights and duties. Only by fulfilling these duties can democracy become truly institutionalized.”
Highlighting education’s critical role in nation-building, he said, “To rebuild Bangladesh, we must equip our students to excel and demonstrate their abilities across all fields.”
