Russia is hopeful about restart of Zaporozhskaya Nuke Plant

Another round of interagency consultations between the Russian side and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place recently in the Russian city of Kaliningrad. The IAEA delegation was led by its Director General, Rafael Grossi, and the Russian side by the State Nuclear Corporation Rosatom Director General.

During the meeting, Alexey Likhachev informed about the work currently underway to prepare the Zaporozhskaya NPP for restart of and to ensure its operation in the generation mode.

The discussion mainly centered on ensuring nuclear safety and security of the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which has been experiencing continuous attacks by the armed forces of Ukraine. The meeting also discussed issues related to regular rotations of the IAEA experts at the plant. The Russian side emphasized that during the rotations, the priority will be given to ensure the safety of the IAEA staff and the representatives of the relevant agencies involved.

Rafael Grossi shared his understanding of the situation around the Zaporozhskaya NPP and informed about his recent international contacts regarding the issue.

Russian delegation also comprised the Head of Rostechnadzor Alexander Trembitskiy, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov, Deputy Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Mikhail Kondratenkov; Chief of Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Alexey Rtischev; and Head of the General Directorate for Facilities’ Security of the Federal National Guard Troops Service Vladimir Mashevskiy.

Other issues of mutual interest pertinent to the cooperation between Russia and the IAEA were also touched upon during the consultations. Both sides regarded the conversation as useful and open and confirmed their commitment to maintaining contacts. – Press release
