BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said his family was profoundly touched by the outpouring of condolences and prayers from across Bangladesh and abroad following the death of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Tarique said the conclusion of the three-day national mourning period highlighted how Khaleda Zia had impacted people in diverse and often unexpected ways.

He noted that the depth and breadth of public response revealed dimensions of her legacy that even her family may not have fully realized. Many saw Khaleda Zia as a symbol of courage and steadfastness, someone who stood by her convictions despite adversity—a message that resonated beyond politics and across all walks of life.

Expressing gratitude, Tarique thanked the interim government, particularly Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and his Cabinet, for their leadership and prompt coordination in arranging a dignified and honorable farewell within a short timeframe.

He also acknowledged the support of the international community, including neighboring countries, diplomats, friends, and global partners. The presence of foreign dignitaries at the funeral, along with condolence messages, letters, social media tributes, and official statements, was deeply heartening.

Tarique further expressed appreciation for members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and officials from various ministries and administrations for their professionalism and care during the final rites. He said his family was particularly moved by their sense of duty throughout the mourning period.

Special thanks were extended to the President Guard Regiment for providing a guard of honor and final salute, which Tarique said reflected the nation’s respect as Khaleda Zia was escorted to her final resting place.

He also recognized the contributions of many others who worked behind the scenes to ensure the events proceeded smoothly and with dignity.

Concluding his message, Tarique said the sight of people gathering from every corner of the country to pay their respects was something his family had not anticipated. He described it as a powerful and unifying moment that reflected the compassion and shared humanity of the Bangladeshi people.

On behalf of his family and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique thanked all who stood with them in grief and remembrance, saying the solidarity shown would remain a lasting source of comfort and strength.
