Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has instructed relevant authorities to urgently fill vacant positions of headmaster in government primary schools across the country, prioritising qualified and experienced candidates.

He emphasised that the recruitment process should be expedited through a formal notification in coordination with the Public Service Commission (PSC).

During a meeting held on Monday at the State Guest House Jamuna, the Chief Adviser also enquired about the condition of schools for female students, including whether current infrastructure is accommodating to girls.

"At least one female architect should be included in every school construction committee to ensure women-friendly facilities. From planning to implementation, gender sensitivity must be considered a key priority," he said.

Primary and Mass Education Adviser Prof Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder, Secretary Abu Taher Md Masud Rana, Chief Adviser’s Principal Secretary Siraz Uddin Miah and other officials were present at the meeting, said the Chief Adviser’s press wing on Tuesday.

Prof Yunus stressed the importance of introducing multimedia classrooms with internet access to all primary schools gradually to enhance the learning environment.

He also sought updates on the current quality of education in government-run schools and the evaluation of their performance.

Adviser Bidhan Ranjan acknowledged that although significant investments have been made in infrastructure, improvements in educational quality remain lacking.

“We are evaluating and ranking schools. Special programmes are being launched to support those that are underperforming,” he said, adding that schools with strong leadership, particularly capable head teachers-tend to perform better.

Bidhan Ranjan said around 32,000 primary schools currently have vacant headmaster positions. The recruitment process is already underway, he informed the meeting.

The Chief Adviser directed new appointments along with the appointment of headmasters.

“In appointing headmasters in schools, priority should be given to how to bring qualified people. A few categories should be made. Those who have been teaching for many years and those with experience will get priority,” Prof Yunus said.

Along with this, he said, young people should also be given opportunities to be appointed as head teachers. “This appointment process should be completed smoothly.”

The Chief Adviser instructed the officials concerned to change the policy in the transfer of teachers, reports UNB.

"Many times, after being appointed in one upazila, teachers try to get transferred to a school in another upazila, near the city, they go around in various circles with recommendations and lobbying. In this case, there should be a clear policy and process. Only through that process can they be transferred,” he said.
