UN Recommendations to Be Decided Collectively: Adviser
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that decisions regarding the United Nations Human Rights Office’s (OHCHR) recommendations, including the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and limiting the role of DGFI to military intelligence, will be made collectively.
"They have provided several proposals, and we will discuss them together. Once a decision is reached, we will make an announcement," he told reporters at the secretariat after launching an online visa application system for foreign nationals under SB Immigration. He also introduced a new system for simplified passport verification and a national helpline (999) for passport-related complaints.
On the UN's recommendations to dissolve RAB, limit DGFI’s role, and remove army control over Ansar, Chowdhury acknowledged the importance of the UN’s investigation. "We have welcomed their report, and we will review the findings and make decisions accordingly," he said.
The OHCHR’s investigative team released a report on human rights violations in Bangladesh between July 1 and August 15 of the previous year. The findings were presented at a press conference in Geneva on Wednesday by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and other officials.
