A 38-year-old woman died while standing in line to buy rice from Open Market Sale (OMS) in Sitakunda municipality of Chattogram on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Shikha Malakar, wife of day labourer Tapan Malakar from Noakhali.

They used to live in a rented house in the municipality's Niztaluk area for a long time.

Haradhan Chowdhury Babu, panel mayor of the municipality said Shikha Malakar stood in line in front of dealer Rabbani's shop to buy OMS rice on Monday morning.

Due to the pressure of the crowd, Shikha Malakar lost consciousness and fell to the ground.

Locals rushed Shikha Malakar to the Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead, said the panel mayor.

She died of a heart attack due to overcrowding, said Dr. Nur Uddin Rashed, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, reports UNB.
