The Cabinet on Monday approved 29 public holidays for 2027, including 15 general holidays and 14 holidays to be declared by executive order. After excluding holidays that fall on weekly weekends, the country will have 22 effective public holidays.
The decision was taken at the 26th Cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani briefed journalists after the meeting.
He said the approved list includes 15 general holidays for national days and various religious festivals. Four of these holidays will fall on weekly holidays, comprising two Fridays and two Saturdays.
Another 14 holidays will be declared by executive order for the Bengali New Year and various religious festivals. Of these, three will coincide with weekly holidays, including one Friday and two Saturdays.
As a result, seven of the 29 holidays will overlap with weekly weekends, leaving 22 effective public holidays in 2027.
Under the approved arrangements, government employees will be allowed up to three optional holidays annually for various religious festivals.
Government employees from small ethnic communities working in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and other parts of the country will also be entitled to two optional holidays to celebrate their main social festival, Boisabi, or similar festivals.
