Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today joined a discussion organised by the Ministry of Education marking World Teachers’ Day 2026. The discussion was held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

For the first time, a total of 100 teachers selected from different categories, ranging from primary to higher education, will be honoured with the ‘Guni Shikkhok Sammanona’ (Distinguished Teachers’ Award) on the occasion.

The Prime Minister will hand over the awards to the teachers at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium this afternoon. The awardees will receive Tk 2 lakh in cash, a crest and a certificate of recognition.

The number of recipients of the national teachers’ award has been increased to 100 from 12 this year to enhance the social status and professional recognition of distinguished teachers.

They were selected from educational institutions at the primary and secondary levels, including schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions, as well as universities.

Of the 100 awardees, 10 are from the primary level, 20 from the secondary level, 25 from colleges, 20 from general universities, 10 from medical colleges, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, four from science and technology and other specialised universities, and five under the prime minister’s special quota.

World Teachers’ Day is observed globally every year on October 5 to highlight the importance of teachers’ dignity, rights and professional development and ensuring quality education, reports BSS.
