The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials seized 80 gold bars weighing around 9.34 kilograms from two airlines staff members at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) here today.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information in a press release today.

On information, a CIID team conducted a drive after an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai landed at the airport.

Emirates flight EK582 landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 9:30 am, following which CIID officials took position and conducted an operation in the apron area beneath Boarding Bridge No. 4 near Gate No. 21 adjacent to the airport runway.

During the operation, the officials recovered 80 gold bars concealed inside the shoes of two Emirates Airlines employees, identified as Md Manik Mia and Md Mizanur Rahman.

Both are employed as Aircraft Technical Helpers (ATHs).

According to customs intelligence officials, each gold bar weighed around 117 grams. The 80 bars together weighed approximately 9.34kg and had an estimated market value of Tk 16.25 crore.

CIID officials said they are investigating who was involved in the gold smuggling attempt using the airline employees' shoes and to whom the gold was supposed to be delivered, reports BSS.

Further legal action will be taken in this regard, they said.
