BCG seizes 2 tonnes of smuggled coal, 2 boats in Patenga
The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG), in a drive, has seized around two tonnes of smuggled mineral coal and two wooden boats used in a smuggling operation from the city's Patenga area.
Personnel from the Coast Guard Outpost Patenga carried out the operation on Sunday evening near Ghat No. 18 of the Karnaphuli Channel, under Patenga Police Station.
Lieutenant Commander Sumon Al Mukit, Media Officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard East Zone, confirmed the seizure in a press release issued Monday. He said the operation was launched based on a tip-off about two suspicious wooden boats in the channel.
During the search, authorities seized two tons of mineral coal worth approximately Tk 3.40 lakh, along with the two "Sampan" boats used to transport it. The smugglers on board fled after spotting the Coast Guard team.
Legal proceedings are currently underway in connection with the seized coal and the boats used in the smuggling, the release added
Mukit said the Coast Guard's regular operations will continue to prevent smuggling activities across the coastal areas, reports BSS.
