Sheikh Hasina’s Declared Assets Total Tk 4.34 Crore

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina declared movable and immovable assets worth Tk 4.34 crore in her own name in her affidavit submitted to the Election Commission for the 2024 parliamentary election.

The disclosure has drawn renewed attention after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in a crimes-against-humanity case linked to the July Mass Uprising and ordered the confiscation of properties held in her name.

The tribunal has also directed that the confiscated assets be brought under state ownership. The legal process for implementing the order and determining how the assets could be used to compensate victims’ families is now being worked out.

International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Monday that the law or tribunal rules contain provisions relating to property confiscation and compensation for victims. However, the detailed procedure would have to be determined under existing laws.

He said that if the tribunal’s Rules of Procedure are amended to clarify the process, the changes could have a retrospective effect, allowing the confiscation order in Hasina’s case to be implemented without legal complications.

What Assets Did Hasina Declare?

According to her election affidavit, Hasina had Tk 28,500 in cash.

She reported nearly Tk 2.39 crore deposited with banks and financial institutions, along with Tk 25 lakh in savings certificates and Tk 55 lakh in fixed deposits.

She also declared three motor vehicles, including vehicles received as gifts, although their values were not specified in the affidavit.

Her declared assets included gold and other precious metals worth Tk 13.25 lakh and furniture valued at Tk 7.40 lakh.

Hasina also reported owning 15.3 bighas of agricultural land in Tungipara, Gopalganj Sadar, Gazipur and Rangpur. The purchased portion of the land was valued at Tk 6.78 lakh.

In addition, she declared a plot in Purbachal valued at Tk 34.76 lakh.

She also listed 6.10 decimals of land, including a three-storey building, in Tungipara, Gopalganj. The acquisition value of the property was shown as Tk 5 lakh.

Taken together, the assets declared in Hasina’s own name were valued at Tk 4.34 crore in her election affidavit.

The tribunal’s order has now raised questions over which of these assets will be subject to confiscation and how the state will take control of them once the legal procedure is finalised.
