Govt committed to peaceful Biswa Ijtema: Home Minister

“We are committed to hold the upcoming Biswa Ijtema in peaceful and orderly manner,” he said. 

He made the remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting with representatives of the Saad faction of Tabligh Jamaat at the Home Ministry today. 

The minister called on both factions of Tabligh Jamaat to resolve their differences through mutual understanding and hold the Ijtema without creating any disorder.

The meeting discussed the Ijtema schedule, security arrangements and other related issues.

Ahmed said the government had already held discussions with representatives of the Zubair faction and subsequently met the Saad faction to hear their views.

Considering the opinions of all concerned, the two-phase World Ijtema has been scheduled for January 8-10 and January 15-17 at the Tongi Ijtema ground, he said.

On the venue, the minister said, both factions have expressed their interest in holding the Ijtema at the Tongi ground. 

He noted that an agreement reached during the previous government had stated that the Saad faction would not hold the Ijtema at the Tongi venue.

However, representatives of the Saad faction opposed that decision at today's meeting and renewed their demand to hold an Ijtema there.

They proposed organizing a separate one-phase Ijtema at the Tongi ground after the completion of the two scheduled phases and before Ramadan, or alternatively around the end of November, allowing a reasonable time gap.

The government is considering the proposal seriously and will hold further discussions with both factions before taking a final decision, the minister said.

The views of law enforcement agencies will also be taken into account to ensure public safety and maintain law and order, he added.

Regarding the possible arrival of Maulana Saad, Ahmed said the matter falls under visa policy and the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. 

A decision will be taken in accordance with the relevant rules and policies, he said.

Responding to questions about the country's overall law and order situation, the home minister said crime has come under considerable control compared with the past.

"Analysis of available data shows a significant improvement in the overall law and order situation," he said, adding that compiled police data indicated declines in crimes including murder, abduction and violence against women.

He attributed the improvement to the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies and said the government remains committed to ensuring public safety.

Referring to the recent death of a female teacher in a robbery incident in the capital, the minister said police arrested the prime suspect within 12 hours of the incident.

The motorcycle allegedly used in the crime was recovered and other materials linked to the incident were seized and handed over to the court, he said.

Ahmed also said internal intelligence and monitoring mechanisms within law enforcement agencies remain active. 

"If any specific allegation of negligence or non-cooperation by a member of the forces is found, it will be investigated and necessary action will be taken," he added.

The minister reiterated that the government is closely monitoring the law and order situation and will continue its efforts to make public safety and stability stronger and more sustainable.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Mohammad Shamim Kaiser attended the meeting as a special guest. 

Senior officials from the Home and Religious Affairs ministries and representatives of the Saad faction of Tabligh Jamaat were also present.

Earlier, a similar meeting was held on August 18, 2026, with representatives of the Zubair faction to discuss the Bishwa Ijtema schedule, security and other related matters, reports BSS.
