Govt Plans Professional Police Force Free From Politics

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the government is working to build a modern, professional and people-oriented police force that will remain free from political influence.

Addressing the graduation parade of the first phase of the 27th BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, he said police should not serve as a tool for any political party or group but should become a trusted institution for public safety.

The minister said ensuring public security and restoring public confidence in law enforcement are among the government's key priorities.

He said various measures have been taken to restore the morale of the police force, which he claimed was damaged by excessive politicisation under the previous government.

Salahuddin said a system of rewards for professionalism and strict disciplinary action against misconduct has been introduced to strengthen integrity, discipline and accountability within the force.

Congratulating the newly appointed officers, he urged them to uphold equality before the law and ensure that no citizen faces discrimination while seeking police services.

"From political activists to marginal farmers, everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. No one seeking police services should face discrimination," he said.

The minister also stressed maintaining discipline, chain of command, loyalty and teamwork among police members. He encouraged officers to improve their skills in cybersecurity and criminal investigation to address emerging challenges.

Reaffirming the government's zero-tolerance policy against corruption, he called on police personnel to perform their duties with honesty and dedication.

A total of 58 probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) officially joined the force through the parade, including 57 officers from the first phase of the 27th BCS (Police) batch and one from the 28th batch.

During the ceremony, awards were presented to outstanding probationary officers for their performances in different fields.
