UN Panel Seeks to Keep Humans in Control of AI

António Guterres has urged a balanced approach to artificial intelligence, calling for “less hype and less fear” as the United Nations moves to strengthen oversight of the rapidly advancing technology.
Speaking on Friday, the UN chief said a newly formed Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence would work to ensure that human control over AI systems becomes a practical and enforceable reality.
Guterres stressed that governance guided by scientific expertise should not be seen as an obstacle to innovation but as a safeguard for responsible progress.
He confirmed that 40 experts from around the world have already been appointed to the panel, which is expected to advise on global standards, risks, and ethical use of AI while supporting the development of trustworthy and accountable technologies.
The initiative reflects growing international concern over the societal, economic, and security implications of powerful AI systems, as governments and institutions seek to establish common rules for their safe deployment.
