A Russian drone strike on a bus carrying mine workers in Ukraine’s central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region killed at least 12 people on Sunday, according to regional officials.

The attack occurred near the town of Ternivka, around 65 kilometres from the front line, police said. The bus was transporting workers after the end of their shift from a mining facility operated by DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company.

Images released by emergency services showed a heavily damaged bus, with shattered side windows and a windscreen hanging loose from the frame, suggesting the passengers had already disembarked or were thrown clear by the blast.

“The enemy drone struck near a company shuttle bus in the Pavlograd district. Preliminary information indicates 12 people were killed and seven others injured,” said Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the regional military administration.

The circumstances of the attack could not be independently verified.

Earlier overnight, another drone strike in the region killed a man and a woman in the city of Dnipro, Ganzha said. The attacks came as a unilateral reduction in Russian strikes on Ukraine, announced by US President Donald Trump, was due to expire on Sunday.

Trump said last week that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to halt strikes on Kyiv and other towns during cold weather, though the exact terms of the understanding remain unclear and were not confirmed by the Kremlin.

Separately, a Russian drone strike hit a maternity hospital in Ukraine’s southern Zaporizhzhia region earlier on Sunday, wounding at least seven people, including two women undergoing medical examinations, according to regional authorities.
