World leaders, foreign governments and international organisations on Tuesday expressed deep condolences over the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her political legacy and standing with the people of Bangladesh in mourning.
The United States conveyed sympathy, recognising her role in shaping Bangladesh’s modern political history and acknowledging her contributions to the country’s development and democratic journey.
Russia recalled the cordial bilateral relations maintained during her three terms in office, noting that she would be remembered for strengthening ties between the two countries.
China mourned the passing of the veteran leader, with its ambassador describing her as a respected statesperson whose role in advancing bilateral relations would be remembered with gratitude. Beijing also reaffirmed its longstanding engagement with Bangladesh and the BNP.
India expressed profound sorrow at her death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled her historic role as Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and said her contributions to national development and India-Bangladesh relations would endure. He also reflected on his meeting with her in Dhaka and said her legacy would continue to guide bilateral cooperation.
Pakistan’s prime minister and president both expressed grief, praising her lifelong public service and describing her as a committed friend. They extended solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and offered prayers for her soul.
The United Kingdom said it was deeply saddened by her passing and extended condolences to her family and the nation. Japan recalled her efforts to strengthen bilateral friendship, highlighting her visits that contributed to long-standing cooperation between the two countries.
Germany honoured her long public career, noting her role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape and recalling past high-level engagements that strengthened bilateral ties. France also paid tribute to her national contributions, describing her as a significant figure in Bangladesh’s public life.
Australia, the European Union and several other governments expressed sympathy, standing with Bangladesh during the time of mourning.
The United Nations reaffirmed its solidarity with the government and people of Bangladesh, while the regional body BIMSTEC also conveyed heartfelt condolences, remembering her as a prominent leader of the region.
