The Bangladesh-Nepal Friendship Society in collaboration with Gulshan Society hosted a candle lighting at Shahabuddin Park  Sunday evening in memory of persons killed in the recent floods in Nepal.

Ambassador of Nepal to Dhaka, Ghanshyam Bhandari, in his speech has expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Bangladesh to stand by the victims of Nepal floods.

Diplomats of different countries and representatives of development partners also graced the occasion.

President of Bangladesh-Nepal Friendship Society Moshiur Ahmed and  General Secretary Salahuddin Kutu spoke on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad also adopted a condolence motion on August 27 following the tragedy in Nepal.

Emergency response teams have been working relentlessly to find survivors since a tsunami-like wall of water and mud swept through the China-Nepal border following a glacial and rock collapse on August 26.

The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal crossed 1,280 on Friday as search and rescue operations entered tenth day while 275 Indian nationals are still missing and 166 rescued so far in the Himalayan nation.

According to latest local media reports, the death toll from the Bhote Koshi flood-related disaster in Nepal has reached 1,287, while 5,083 people are still missing. The situation remained fluid, with rescue, recovery and identification operations continuing under extremely difficult terrain and weather conditions.

Bangladesh has provided US$1 million, equivalent to Tk 12.3 crore, to Nepal to support relief, recovery and humanitarian efforts following devastating floods and mudslides in the country's northern region, the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in the city on Thursday.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir conveyed the message to Nepalese Ambassador in Dhaka Ghanshyam Bhandari.

A foreign ministry spokesman said Kobir also handed him over a letter from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for his Nepalese counterpart Balendra Shah expressing Bangladesh’s deep condolences for the loss of lives and property caused by the disaster.

Their meeting took place at the state gust house Padma.

The assistance has been contributed to the Nepal Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund to support the country's ongoing relief and recovery efforts following the natural disaster. Earlier, on September 1, Kobir signed a condolence book opened at the Nepalese Embassy in Dhaka, expressing Bangladesh's solidarity with the government and people of Nepal over the loss of lives and destruction caused by the disaster. – GreenWatch Desk
