
A Rickshaw Rally was organised in the capital on Sunday by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to mark the mass upsurge anniversary
Dhaka, Aug 3 – A vibrant Rickshaw Rally featuring around 300 colourfully decorated rickshaws paraded through major streets of Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
The rally, which began at 3pm from the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, showcased rickshaws adorned with graffiti and artwork themed on the historic July Uprising. They proceeded through Kakrail, Shantinagar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Rampura, Hatirjheel, Madhubagh and Moghbazar, before returning to the Academy.
Nationalistic and movement-themed songs were played from loudspeakers mounted on the participating rickshaws, adding a festive spirit to the rally.
The rally was inaugurated by Rahima Begum, mother of July martyr Sohel. Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Secretary and Acting Director General Mohammad Wares also attended the opening ceremony.
Other notable guests included Pradyot Kumar Das, Acting Director of the Fine Arts Department; Begum Kamrun Nahar, Course Coordinator of the Training Department; Dr. Irene Parvin Lopa, Senior Instructor (Theatre); GM Zakir Hossain, Deputy Director of Administration; Sorkar Zia Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Director of Finance, Accounts and Planning; Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Deputy Director of Theatre and Film; Md Mahatab Hossain, Assistant Director (General Services); and Lighting Designer Purnolakha Chakma, among others.
Earlier in the day, rickshaws from six different locations – Motijheel (Janata Bank HQ), GPO, Kamalapur (Ideal School), Rampura (Madhubagh Bridge), Karwan Bazar, and Khilgaon (Joropukur) – set off for the Academy. Each route contributed 50 rickshaws, totalling 300.
The participants, including rickshaw pullers, wore themed T-shirts, caps, bandanas, and gamchas, while carrying flags, placards, and paintings inspired by the July Uprising—adding colour and energy to the rally, which aimed to promote the spirit of resistance and cultural pride. - UNB
