The government has expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation submitted by Ad-Din Medical College Hospital over the deaths of six newborns, saying the hospital failed to adequately address allegations of negligence.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain on Wednesday said the hospital’s response to a show-cause notice lacked crucial information and included excessive, largely irrelevant details.

“The explanation contained many unnecessary issues, while the required information was not properly addressed. Therefore, the health ministry is not satisfied with the response,” he told reporters at the Secretariat.

The minister said the matter would be discussed further at the ministry’s next meeting, where authorities are expected to decide on the next course of action.

He reiterated that the government remains firm in its earlier position regarding the incident.

The controversy stems from the deaths of six newborns at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar on May 27. The infants reportedly died in a post-operative ward shortly after being kept under observation.

Following the incident, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) formed an investigation committee. On June 4, the probe report found evidence of negligence by the hospital authorities in connection with the deaths.

The same day, the DGHS issued a show-cause notice asking the hospital to explain why its licence should not be revoked.

In response to the incident, hospital authorities on June 6 announced a support package for the affected families, including lifetime free medical treatment, employment opportunities and free education.

A member of the hospital’s legal team disclosed the measures during a press briefing, saying the package was part of efforts to support the grieving families following the tragedy.
