Lionel Messi scored twice and contributed to the opening goal as Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 3-1 in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday.
Germán Berterame opened the scoring in the 45th minute, heading home a cross from Luis Suárez after a move involving Messi to give Miami the lead just before half-time.
Messi then struck twice in four minutes, scoring in the 56th and 60th minutes to extend Miami's advantage to 3-0. Berterame assisted on both goals, while Suárez set up Messi's second strike.
With his 15th assist of the regular season, Messi drew level with Son Heung-min of Los Angeles FC at the top of the league's assist standings. He also became the first player in MLS history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons.
The Argentine forward's brace took his league-leading goal tally to 25. He won the MLS Golden Boot last season with 29 goals and, alongside Josef Martínez, is one of only two players in league history to score at least 25 goals in two regular seasons.
Messi has now recorded 40 goal contributions this season, leaving him nine short of Carlos Vela's MLS single-season record of 49, set with Los Angeles FC in 2019. Inter Miami have four regular-season matches remaining.
Berterame also made a significant contribution, providing assists for both of Messi's goals. Suárez recorded an assist on the opening goal and another on Messi's second strike, continuing his productive season.
Atlanta reduced the deficit in the 89th minute when Fafà Picault converted a penalty, but Miami held on to secure their third consecutive victory.
Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair made two saves, while Atlanta's Lucas Hoyos also stopped two shots.
The result followed a 2-2 draw between the teams earlier in September.
Inter Miami are scheduled to visit the New York Red Bulls next Saturday, while Atlanta United will host Chicago Fire.
