The 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered the record books after, for the first time, the top four teams in the FIFA World Ranking all advanced to the semi-finals, underlining the dominance of the world's highest-ranked nations on football's biggest stage.

The historic feat was completed when world No. 1 Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in the final quarter-final to join Spain, France and England in the last four.

According to FIFA's latest men's world rankings, released on June 11, Argentina occupy the top spot, followed by Spain, France and England. Never before in World Cup history had all four highest-ranked teams reached the semi-finals in the same tournament.

Spain secured their semi-final berth by defeating Belgium 2-1, while France overcame Morocco 2-0. England also progressed with a 2-1 victory over Norway, setting up a blockbuster line-up featuring the world's four strongest-ranked teams.

The achievement has been aided by the tournament's revised competition format. Under the draw, the top four seeded teams were placed in separate sections of the knockout bracket, ensuring they could not face one another before the semi-finals, provided they won their respective groups and progressed through the knockout rounds.

All four teams successfully negotiated their routes, turning what had long been a statistical possibility into reality.

The bracket placed Argentina and Spain on opposite sides, keeping alive the prospect of a dream final between the world's top two ranked teams. England and France were also separated, allowing both European heavyweights to reach the semi-finals without meeting earlier in the tournament.

Football fans can now look forward to two high-profile semi-final clashes. France will take on Spain on Tuesday, while Argentina will face England on Wednesday, with the winners advancing to the World Cup final.

The milestone is particularly significant given the history of the FIFA World Ranking. Introduced in 1994, the ranking system has often highlighted the unpredictability of the World Cup, where highly ranked teams have regularly stumbled.

Defending champions France crashed out in the group stage in 2002, while Italy (2010), Spain (2014), Germany (2018) and Belgium (2022) all suffered early exits despite entering their respective tournaments among the world's highest-ranked sides.

Since the 1998 World Cup, no edition had produced a semi-final line-up featuring all four top-ranked teams. The 2026 tournament has finally broken that trend, delivering one of the most remarkable statistical achievements in World Cup history and setting the stage for a fitting finale between the world's elite football nations.
