Erling Haaland said Norway's impressive World Cup campaign has inspired a new generation of footballers despite the team's 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Haaland was unable to score for the first time in 15 competitive appearances for Norway as Jude Bellingham's brace sent England into the semifinals.

The Manchester City striker finished the tournament with seven goals in five matches, helping Norway reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 28 years. Their remarkable run included a memorable last-16 victory over Brazil, with Haaland scoring twice against the five-time world champions.

"How we put Norway on the map is maybe the thing that touches me the most," Haaland said.

"Hopefully we can now establish ourselves at the Euros, World Cups and beyond because our generation is amazing. I also hope this inspires young people back home to believe they can play on the biggest stage wearing a Norway shirt."

The 25-year-old said Norway's breakthrough tournament could transform the country's football ambitions.

"It's difficult to take in everything we've experienced over the last six weeks," he said.

"I think this changes Norway, and I think it changes me. We've shown it's possible to become one of the biggest football nations in the world. Now it's about maintaining that standard."

Haaland also praised England midfielder Jude Bellingham, his former Borussia Dortmund teammate, after his match-winning performance.

"We had so much fun together, and I'm not surprised he scored two goals today," Haaland said. "He's one of the best players in the world. England is lucky because every team would want a player like Jude."

Haaland was substituted during the first half of extra time after struggling with fatigue and the intense Miami heat.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken said the striker had exhausted himself during the tournament and had also suffered a dead leg in the second half.

"He gave everything he had," Solbakken said. "He scored seven goals in five games for us. It has been a fantastic World Cup."
