22-Day Hilsa Fishing Ban Begins to Protect Breeding Stock
A 22-day government ban on catching, selling, and transporting Hilsa fish will begin on October 4 (Saturday) to protect mother Hilsa during the peak breeding season in three upazilas of the district.
District Fishery Officer (DFO) Md. Saifur Rahman said the nationwide ban will run from October 4 to 25 this year.
“The Mother Hilsa Conservation campaign is being carried out across all three upazilas of the district. The government is providing VGF food assistance to fishermen who refrain from catching Hilsa during this period,” he said.
Under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme, the government has allocated 244.65 metric tons of rice for distribution to fishermen’s families in Harirampur, Shibalaya, and Daulatpur upazilas.
A total of 9,786 fishermen families will receive the aid, with each family getting 25 kilograms of rice per month during the fishing ban period, the DFO added.
