A 90-year-old woman was killed after being trapped in a fire that broke out in her home at Gobindapur village in Matlab South upazila on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Jeora Khatun, wife of late Abdur Rob Chowdhury.

As her two sons and a daughter live elsewhere due to work and family commitments the elderly woman used to live alone in the house.

Abdur Sattar, an assistant teacher at a local high school and a resident of the village, said Jeora Khatun went to bed around 10 pm on Saturday night after having dinner.

Early on Sunday morning, the fire suddenly erupted in her house but she could not be rescued despite attempts.

The fire is believed to have started due to an electrical short circuit and spread quickly, reports UNB.

Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed of Matlab South Police Station said police were sent to the spot but no formal complaint has been filed.
