India Sends 4,000 Tonnes of Diesel to Bangladesh

Around 4,000 metric tonnes of diesel, equivalent to approximately 4.7 million litres, have arrived in Bangladesh from India through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline.

The consignment reached the receiving terminal in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, marking the 72nd shipment delivered through the cross-border pipeline.

The transfer began at 9am on September 12 and was completed at around 8:30pm on September 13, according to reports.

With the latest shipment, the total volume of diesel imported through the pipeline since its inauguration in March 2023 has reached 330,087 tonnes.

The fuel will be distributed almost equally among three state-owned oil marketing companies—Padma Oil Company, Meghna Petroleum and Jamuna Oil Company—for supply to different parts of the country.

The pipeline connects India’s Siliguri area with Parbatipur in Dinajpur and was established under a bilateral agreement between Bangladesh and India. Under the agreement, the two countries plan to import around 2 million tonnes of diesel over 15 years.

The pipeline has an annual capacity of up to 1 million tonnes of high-speed diesel and is intended to ensure a more reliable fuel supply, particularly for Bangladesh’s northern region.
