Bangladesh’s LNG supply to the national gas grid rose to 810 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) on Saturday, pushing total gas supply to 2,425 mmcfd—the highest level since the disruption at Excelerate Energy’s floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) on July 21.
According to Petrobangla’s 4pm data, Excelerate Energy’s FSRU supplied 300 mmcfd, while Summit’s FSRU supplied 510 mmcfd to the national grid.
Domestic gas production and supply stood at 1,615 mmcfd.
The increase in LNG availability marks a significant recovery following the disruption at Excelerate Energy’s FSRU off Maheshkhali, which sharply reduced imported gas supplies and contributed to widespread gas shortages and pressure on electricity generation.
Petrobangla data showed that national gas supply had fallen to 1,931.2 mmcfd on August 13–14, against an estimated demand of 3,854 mmcfd.
Supply stood at 2,039.2 mmcfd on August 12–13, 2,109.6 mmcfd on August 11–12 and 2,199.1 mmcfd on August 10–11.
Saturday’s 2,425 mmcfd supply is therefore the highest recorded since the July 21 disruption.
Power Sector to Receive More Gas
Petrobangla is planning to allocate up to 960 mmcfd of gas to power plants to support electricity generation amid the ongoing power crisis and load shedding.
Gas allocation to the power sector has remained around 860 mmcfd at different times. Petrobangla plans to increase it to as much as 960 mmcfd depending on overall gas availability and system requirements.
The additional supply is intended to support power generation while authorities balance limited gas supplies among power plants, fertiliser factories, industries and other consumers.
According to Petrobangla data, domestic sources account for around two-thirds of Bangladesh’s total gas supply, with LNG making up the remainder.
The country’s two operational FSRUs have a combined regasification capacity of about 1,100 mmcfd. Summit’s FSRU can supply up to 500 mmcfd, while Excelerate Energy’s terminal has a capacity of around 600 mmcfd.
Excelerate is currently supplying 300 mmcfd, below its full capacity, while Summit is supplying 510 mmcfd.
The recovery in LNG supply is expected to ease pressure on the national gas grid, although demand remains significantly higher than available supply.
