Govt Officials Barred From Backing ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ in Vote
The Election Commission has barred government officials and employees from campaigning for either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ in the referendum scheduled for 12 February, warning that any such activity will be treated as a punishable offence.
The directive was issued on 29 January by the Election Commission Secretariat.
Citing Section 21 of the Referendum Ordinance, 2025 and Article 86 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972, the EC said persons employed in the service of the Republic may only provide information or raise public awareness about the referendum. They are strictly prohibited from influencing voters to support either side.
The commission noted that campaigning by government officials could affect the outcome of the referendum and would therefore invite legal action under the existing laws.
All authorities concerned have been asked to take necessary steps to ensure compliance with the directive.
To enforce the order, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, regional election officers, returning officers and other relevant officials have been instructed to act accordingly. Copies of the directive have also been sent to the cabinet secretary, the principal secretary to the chief adviser, all ministries and divisions, and law enforcement agencies for effective implementation.
