Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has directed authorities to ensure strict maintenance of law and order at any cost ahead of the upcoming national election.

The directive came at a high-level meeting held at the state guest house Jamuna on Sunday afternoon, where the overall law and order situation was reviewed in detail. The meeting also discussed security preparations surrounding the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, as well as measures for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Prof Yunus ordered the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi and others linked to criminal activities, stressing that no leniency would be shown.

According to Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, and senior officials from various security and law enforcement agencies.

The Chief Adviser was informed that 31 individuals have been identified through video footage for their suspected involvement in recent attacks on the offices of two national newspapers and two cultural organisations.

So far, six people—Md Kashem Farooqui, Md Saidur Rahman, Rakib Hossain, Md Naeem, Md Sohel Rana and Md Shafiqul Islam—have been arrested from different parts of the country, including Dhaka. Operations are ongoing to detain the remaining suspects.

The meeting also noted that three individuals involved in attempts to create unrest near the residence of the Assistant High Commissioner of India in Chattogram have been identified using video evidence.

Prof Yunus reiterated that maintaining stability, public safety and a peaceful environment is essential to ensure a credible and orderly election.
