The Election Commission (EC) is awaiting certified copies of recent court verdicts before taking any official action regarding the registration and electoral symbol of Jamaat-e-Islami, as well as the oath-taking of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as a councillor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
“We have yet to receive any observations from the Hon’ble Court regarding Jamaat’s registration and electoral symbol. Once we receive the documents, we will take appropriate legal steps,” EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban on Sunday.
The statement comes after the Appellate Division on the same day scrapped a decade-old High Court verdict that had declared Jamaat-e-Islami's registration as a political party illegal.
Asked about Jamaat’s electoral symbol, the EC secretary said, “They will receive whatever the law entitles them to.” He stressed that the EC would not comment further until it receives the official verdict and its observations.
Regarding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, whose councillorship remains pending due to legal proceedings, Akhtar Ahmed said, “We haven’t received the court’s directive on this issue either. As I’ve said before, we cannot make any official statement until we have the court’s written order.”
He also acknowledged that Sunday marked the final day of the current five-year term of Dhaka South City Corporation but reiterated the EC’s position: “We will refrain from commenting until we have received the necessary court documents.”
