The Election Commission (EC) said on Sunday that it still hopes that it would get the government’s approval and the fund to buy Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to hold polls in 150 seats in the next general election using EVMs.

But it would not be possible to use EVMs in the general election if delays occur in getting approval and the fund, said EC.

“We submitted a project to the government for buying EVMs. If the proposal is not approved by mid January, it wouldn’t be possible to hold polls using EVMs. In that case, polling will be held by using paper ballots,” Election Commissioner Rasheda Sultana told reporter at the EC Secretariat at Agargaon in the capital.

She said all this after holding a meeting with   experts.

She said, “If the proposal is approved after mid January, EVMs  cannot be used, and in that case, the EC would take the preparations to hold the election using paper ballots.”

According to the EC Secretariat, the EC had earlier sent a Tk 9,000 crore project to the government to procure to procure EVMs for holding polls in 150 seats using EVMs.

She said that the government was yet to approve the project.
