A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s northeast on Dec 12, prompting a tsunami advisory.

The quake occurred at 11:44 am local time, just days after a stronger 7.5-magnitude tremor hit the same region. The US Geological Survey reported the epicenter 130 km northeast of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory, warning waves of up to 1 metre could affect Hokkaido, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures between noon and 1:20 pm. However, national broadcaster NHK said no tsunami damage is expected.

Earlier the same day, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake was also recorded in Hokkaido.
